Summary

A multidisciplinary exploration of transformation and resilience, translated into a brand identity and 3D-printed object. Rooted in the symbolism of the lotus, growing through mud yet blooming unstained above the surface.

Context

The lotus has long stood as a symbol of purity emerging from difficulty: it grows through mud and murky water, yet blooms above the surface unstained. I saw a parallel in how humans move toward clarity while still living within a turbid, worldly existence, remaining part of it without being wholly defined by it. This became the conceptual foundation for Lomien: using the lotus's growth to trace a human process of transformation and awakening. The lotus also became a quiet metaphor for my own process of settling into life in the U.S., adapting to a new environment while continuing to shape my own identity and direction. Working through each stage of the lotus's growth became a way of working through my own.

The Challenge

Translating an abstract, philosophical narrative (transformation, resilience, awakening) into a single brand concept and physical object, without becoming literal or overly illustrative. The form itself needed to carry the story, not explain it.

My Approach

I structured the project around five stages, each mapping a phase of transformation onto the lotus's own growth cycle: 1. Turbidity — a murky, undefined mixture of emotion, memory, and matter; the raw ground from which anything can form. 2. Passage — enduring pressure and friction while shifting from one state to another. 3. Threshold — the critical point where two states briefly coexist, just before one gives way to the other. 4. Bloom — the moment a being, having moved through turbidity and pressure, reveals its form for the first time. 5. Inherited Memory — the change one being has undergone becomes the starting point for the next. With this structure in place, I developed the visual identity and key visuals to establish tone and brand language, translated each stage into a 3D form language, and used ChatGPT as a thinking partner throughout ideation and visual development. The final form was produced through 3D printing, moving from digital concept to physical object.

Solution

A continuous narrative connecting five conceptual stages, turbidity, passage, threshold, bloom, and inherited memory, into one cohesive brand identity and physical object. The final object reinterprets the lotus's movement from sediment to bloom as sculptural form, exploring how pressure, transition, and time resolve into shape, and how one state of being carries forward into the next.

Impact

Demonstrated the ability to translate a philosophical, non-commercial narrative (transformation, resilience, awakening) into brand and product design language through a structured conceptual framework. Showcased an end-to-end process spanning conceptual development, branding, 3D design, and physical fabrication, while integrating AI tools into the early stages of concept development.
