Context
XingXing, a leading shared mobility platform, sought to evolve beyond a simple transportation utility into a daily lifestyle app. To increase Daily Active Users (DAU) even when they weren't riding scooters, the company launched 'XingXing Walking,' a reward-based pedometer feature.
Challenges
The challenge was to overcome the app's low retention during off-peak hours. We needed to transform the user perception from "an app I only open to ride" to "a fun daily habit." The visual experience had to be engaging enough to motivate users to walk and check the app repeatedly.
Solution
I gamified the user experience to solve retention challenges with two key features. First, I designed a 'Tree Growing' interface where daily check-ins visualize progress. Second, for the referral system, I created a friendly 'Earth' character to make inviting friends feel like a playful mission. I unified these elements with a bold, minimal color system. To ensure efficient motion performance, I proposed adopting Lottie files, which was a first for our team. Although the technology was new to me as well, I rapidly upskilled myself to produce and implement these animations directly, successfully transforming mundane data into delightful daily achievements.
Impact
The feature successfully increased user retention and engagement by visually incentivizing daily interactions. This enhanced user stickiness was a key contributor to securing $15M (20B KRW) in Series B funding, proving the business value of gamified design.
